The Sound of JOY

Working with Ashley is always JOYFUL.  We began with a play day, sharing our thoughts and research to date and then the creation began. 

GROW is a suite of electronic productions that explores the four seasons - spring, summer, autumn and winter - providing an upbeat sonic accompaniment to our installation How Does Your Garden Grow? Every 15 minutes another track plays in turn central to the installation.

JOURNEY was composed by Ashley as an overarching soundscape to the exhibition and pans between speakers throughout the gallery.

In his own words...
"GROW. As Vortex visually explored the connection to patterns in nature such as spirals (Phyllotaxis) and tree branching (Fractals) I took these elements into the sonic world. I explored patterns in dance music production and used the feeling of growing and evolving to provide uplifting compositions to be enjoyed within the physical structure.

The result of resampling field recordings is an alternative experience of the seasons. Inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the ambiguous interpretation of fairy tales, the listener is invited to be inspired and grin like a Cheshire cat to discover the JOY yourself and wonder ‘How Does Your Garden Grow?’

JOURNEY is an evolving sonic landscape exploring the seasonal changes of the natural world. JOURNEY invites listeners to relax and be mindful and consider their wellbeing and connection to the natural world.

Inspired by the murmuration of birds I translated these beautiful patterns into code. Entwining field recordings and synthesised samples of the natural world using a set of chord scale progressions aptly named JOY, I have produced a natural and evolving soundscape that taps into sound based healing and the many benefits this can encompass from uplifting the mood to supporting neurodiverse individuals. 

JOURNEY reflects the joy of nature and provides a calming overarching soundscape to the visual delights of the JOY exhibition. "
